Does anybody else’ German shepherd whine?? I have a 7 year old neutered male (Rigo) and he drives me crazy some days.  He likes to worry - I don’t know another way to describe it. I have tried being a better ‘pack leader’, but he laughs at my attempts at being pack leader smile He listens quite well in the house - not so well outside and off leash. I have tried exercising him more, I leave him peanut butter kongs to chew on.  He goes to daycare once a week and to the dog park once a week (where he generally glues himself to me and won’t play with anyone)
i teach him quite a few tricks to give him something to think about, but he still whines basically because he can. Any suggestions?
His picture is attached/

This is a tough one and one many understand in police K9 work too. It is very tough to correct. To correct unwanted behavior you have to give a timely correction everytime the dog shows the uwanted behavior and positively enforce the desired behavior with a reward. Its almost impossible to sit there and correct your dog everytime he whines. My opinion is you get what you get sometimes. I know some dog training purists will say otherwise but somethings are just hard to change. There are many police dog handlers who have this problem when they try and talk on the radio. Their partners whine so loud its hard to understand them. They put a tremendous amount of time into correcting it. It is tough.

Thank-you!  At least I know I don’t have the ONLY German Shepherd in the world that ‘squeaks’ smile I understand what you are saying about the correction - sometimes a correction makes him whine worse.  Thanks again for your reply!  smile
