This Month - SSD In The Line Of Duty

June was not a good month throughout the years for the SSD law enforcement family.  We lost three outstanding officers during this time period.

Deputy William Littlejohn was rushing an attempt suicide victim to a downtown hospital when his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver.  He died two days later on June 3, 1955. It wasn’t until last year that we knew where Deputy Littlejohn was buried.  Verhoeven Board Member Bob Weil, after much research, located the grave site of Deputy Littlejohn at the Sylvan Cemetery on Auburn Boulevard.  We can now properly honor his service to Sacramento County.

Deputy Kenneth Royal died on June 7, 1968 at the scene of a vehicle stop on two suspects believed responsible for an armed robbery which had been reported earlier.  While being covered by other officers, Deputy Royal approached the vehicle when the suspect opened the car door and shot Deputy Royal.  Deputy Royal died at the scene.  Deputy Royal is buried at East Lawn Sierra Hills on Greenback Lane.

Deputy Steward Baird had finished his work assignment on June 13, 1976 and gone to his wife’s place of business to help her close the establishment.  As they worked, an armed robber entered the business and threatened the patrons.  As the suspect was leaving Deputy Baird confronted the suspect and an altercation began.  Deputy Baird drew his weapon and fired striking the suspect but he continued his violent fight. He struck Deputy Baird sharply in the head causing him to fall and strike his head again.  This final blow killed Deputy Baird.  The suspect had a violent criminal history including a previous arrest for murder.  Deputy Baird is buried at Mount Vernon Memorial Park on Greenback Lane.

Flower arrangements will be placed at the grave sites by the Bruce Verhoeven Foundation in memory of these fallen officers.  Please take a minute to remember these fine officers.

Be safe out there.
