SSD K9 Kaleo Struck With Shovel Apprehending Suspect Following High Speed Chase
K9 KALEO RECEIVED FIVE STAPLES ON HIS HEAD TO CLOSE WOUND

In the early morning hours of April 17th the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department responded to a burglary of a Radio Shack on Hazel Ave. A description of the suspect vehicle was provided by witnesses.

Sheriff’s helicopter STAR located the suspect vehicle and when Deputies tried to stop it a high speed pursuit ensued.

SSD K9 Units assumed the primary positions in the chase that lasted several minutes. The suspect vehicle was eventually disabled and the driver attempted to flee on foot.

SSD K9 Kaleo apprehended the driver in a backyard. When K9 Officer Mark Limbird entered the backyard he saw the suspect striking Kaleo on the top of his head with a shovel. The suspect was taken into custody. K9 Kaleo suffered a deep laceration to the top of his head as a result of being struck with the shovel. K9 Officer Limbird took Kaleo to the nearest emergency VET where they closed the wound with 5 staples. The VET said that despite the laceration Kaleo is OK and should be able to return to work soon.

Tonight in the report writing room at the station K9 Kaleo was his old self and proved to us he is doing OK. If you roll up a piece of paper, throw a paper clip, a leaf, or throw any object for that matter Kaleo will run and get it and bring it back and drop it in your lap. He will then stare at it intently without blinking until you throw it again. This game can go on for hours if you let it. The problem is tonight we were in the report writing room trying to get work done! You just hope someone else comes into the room and starts throwing something.

Our K9’s are our partners. We are with them 10 hours a day, four days a week while at work. They live with us and are part of our families. We appreciate and respect them for going into harms way after weapon wielding suspects so that we don’t have to, making our jobs safer. I’m sure Kaleo will make a full recovery and be back on the streets proudly serving the citizens of Sacramento County very soon.

"What a hideous act of violence directed at Kaleo! I can't even begin to understand how anyone could harm an animal. I'm so glad that Kaleo is all right. Hopefully, he made a full recovery and has returned to work."

The k-9 group is such a value to the public. Thank You all for your great work."

"There are no words adequate to describe how much we come to love these brave and dedicated dogs. I'm on my third Malinois now, andif he took a shovel to the head I honestly don't know if he or I would get the first crack to wack the bad guy. I do know that other than shooting the crook, Beau would put more stitches in him than I ever could.

Glad to hear he's recovering, nothing like a good bite to put him back on the right track."

"I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Mark and Kaleo awhile back. A real good team and an awesome dog. I'm glad that Kaleo is going to be ok. I just hope the puncture wound on the suspect was deeper than the laceration to Keleo's head and the bad guy thinks twice before confronting a K9 again or for that matter even putting the officer's and public at risk by running. Great job Mark and Kaleo!"

"Even with a shovel to his head he makes the apprehension. Great to see that he's doing ok, and nice job on the pursuit."
