SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT DEPLOYS NEW MOTORCYCLES AND WINS BEST MOTORCYCLE DESIGN
SSD Press Release
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department has recently deployed nineteen new 2007 BMW R1200RT-P motorcycles. These new motorcycles have been issued to the Sheriff’s High Impact Motor Unit (HIMU). This unit was formed to give the Sheriff’s Department a highly mobile force that can be deployed at a moment’s notice in the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County and the city of Rancho Cordova experiencing high incidents of crimes involving street gangs, drugs, and weapons.
The new motorcycles are equipped to make them practical for their mission, including alley lights to give deputies the ability to look in yards, vehicles, and other dark areas while patrolling at night. The motorcycles were also equipped with the latest computers and an internal air card. These computers give officers the ability to quickly identify individuals on probation, parole and who have outstanding warrants for their arrest.
Sergeant Todd Thiessen of the High Impact Motor Unit said, “The new motorcycles are fantastic tools that allow us to go where a patrol car can’t. These new motorcycles will reduce our response times and give us an edge in helping to address the problems of gangs, weapons, and drugs.”
The Sheriff’s new HIMU motorcycle was recently awarded the COPSWest Best Motorcycle Design. COPSWest is the nation’s premier law enforcement trade show held annually in Ontario, California. The HIMU motorcycle was chosen from hundreds of entries submitted by law enforcement agencies throughout the western United States. It was selected based on its unique graphics and innovative equipment.
