Vehicle Heat Sensors Donated By Citizen
SYSTEM ALERTS K9 DEPUTY WHEN INTERIOR VEHICLE TEMPERATURE RISES TO UNSAFE LEVELS
By Deputy Kyle Hoertsch
Another great citizen of Sacramento has generously donated money to the Sheriffs Canine Enforcement Detail for greatly needed vehicle heat sensors. The generosity of Grandma Jo (Joan Jameson) has lead to the purchase of thirteen Ray Allen Heat Sensors to be installed in our K9 vehicles. We had the chance to hang out with Grandma Jo at the year end trial and had a great time. I think she brought me (K96) luck because that was Rockys best trial thus far.
While we always have the air conditioning units on in our vehicles for our four-legged partners in the back, that doesn’t protect them 100%. There have been several cases over the past couple of years where the vehicles AC unit has failed unfortunately leading to the death of the K9 from heat exhaustion. While these new heat sensors will not regulate the temperature in the vehicle they will allow the officer to monitor and be alerted when the temperature rises to unsafe levels.
The Ray Allen Heat Sensor System acts as a paging system from the vehicle to the officer. Each kit comes with a remote pager with a digital display. The display shows the temperature of both the front and rear sections of the K9/patrol vehicle. The officer can set the pager to alert you at a certain temperature both via an audible alarm or a silent vibrate alert. The system works off of a radio frequency that is unique to each systems serial number which allows multiple units to be in close proximity of each other. Another key function is that is tells you when you are out of range of the system so you can adjust yourself to not have a false sense of security.
Since we were able to purchase thirteen units at once the folks at Ray Allen gave us a discounted rate. This rate allowed us to purchase the upgraded model that not only has the heat sensor but the K9 deployment function as well. This system will allow us to deploy our K9 partners at any time at the touch of a button on the custom display/remote that will be worn in a molded holster on our duty belt. While we make it a point to never get into a situation where you need to depend on your K9 partner to get you out of it is nice to know they are there ready and able at the touch of the button to deploy from the vehicle.
It is donations like this that allows our hard working partners to work in a safe environment working the job they love for the longest period of time. The Sacramento Sheriff’s Canine Enforcement Detail is very fortunate to have such citizens who care about our four legged partners.
