On Wednesday evening, July 13, 2005, Deputies Joe Kievernagel and Kevin Blount, along with observer Eric Henrikson took off from Mather Air Field for routine patrol in our Star 6 helicopter. 

July 13th 2005 remains one of the most tragic days in the history of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department.  Joe and Kevin were killed that evening and Eric was severely injured when Star 6 crashed on a hillside near Lake Natomas.

This year as we remember “our sky heroes”, members of the Bruce Verhoeven Foundation will place flowers at their grave sites at Calvary Cemetery.

You will also find a Memorial tribute to them in the Sacramento Bee on July 13th.
