Four Canine Teams from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department competed in the 35th annual Stockton Police Canine Trials on Saturday April 1st. The event is one of nine police canine competitions sponsored by the Western States Police Canine Association, and the first for this Trial season.
There were 26 total competitors in Saturday’s competition. The competition is broken down into five categories in the Open Class; Overall, which is a total of all categories combined, Search, Obedience, Agility and Protection. There is also a Novice Class, where there were six teams who have either been on the street for one year or less, or competed in two or less trials within one year. In addition, there were eight teams competing for the Chief’s trophy. This category consists of two teams from one agency competing for the top combined score.
SSDK9 had an impressive day. Every team from our detail came home a winner. Sergeant Mike Butler and K9 Sammy won 4th place in the Search phase. Deputy Mark Limbird and K9 Kaleo won 4th in Agility, and 5th in Search. Deputy Limbird and Sgt. Butler tied in the Search phase, however, the score in obedience broke the tie. Deputy Rick Kemp and K9 Clint won 1st place in Protection, 1st place in Novice and 3rd place Overall. Deputy Steve LeCouve and K9 Dantes won 1st place Overall, 1st place Agility, 2nd place in Protection and 2nd place in Obedience. Deputies LeCouve and Limbird were 2nd place in the Chief’s trophy race, and Sgt Butler and Deputy Kemp were 4th place in the Chief’s trophy race.
The next W.S.P.C.A. Competition will be held by the Manteca Police Department on Saturday April 28th.
