On Wednesday, 07-13-2005 Deputies Joe Kievernagel, Kevin Blount and Eric Henrikson climbed aboard Sheriff’s helicopter “STAR VI”. They flew into the sky above greater Sacramento and went to work. Their job was to provide Air support for officers on the ground, so they would be safer, so they could go home to their loved ones at the end of their shift. Their job was to risk their lives for us cops on the ground. Their job was to tell us about dangers we could not see. Their job was to watch our backs. They did it all the time and they were exceptional at it.
Something went terribly wrong. STAR VI went down with her brave crew on a hillside and tumbled down into a ravine. Deputies Joe Kievernagel and Kevin Blount did not survive. Deputy Eric Henrikson is in critical condition, fighting for his life.
We at the Canine Detail ask all of you to take a few moments to remember Joe and Kevin who paid the ultimate price and sacrificed everything for the rest of us.
We also ask you take a few more moments and pray with us for Eric, as he fights for his life.
Finally, please take a look at the pictures we have posted in our photo gallery of our Air Operations Detail.
Joe and Kevin, good bye old friends. You are forever in our hearts and we are forever in your debt.
Eric, we pray for you. Fight on!
