SSD Detective Shot and Killed In The line Of Duty
DETECTIVE VU NGUYEN WAS ASSIGNED TO THE GANG UNIT

| Detective Vu Nguyen |
It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Detective Vu Nguyen. Detective Nguyen was shot and killed in the line of duty today as he chased a subject over fences in a neighborhood in South Sacramento. Detectective Nguyen was assigned to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Gang Unit. The City and County of Sacramento have experienced an increase in gang related violence in recent years. Detetective Nguyen was assigned the task of stemming the violence through proactive police work and that is what he was doing today.
Members of the SSD K9 Unit were preparing to conduct a demonstration and bring toys to the Children’s Receiving Home around 2 p.m. today when we heard the “Officer Down” over the radio. Wednesdays are our K9 Units overlap day so we had numerous K9 teams available to respond. K9 Units and SWAT team members from all surrounding agencies responded to assist and the response was overwhelming and quick. We would like to thank those who arrived and followed leads and put themselves in harms way to search for the suspect who tragically took Deputy Nguyen’s life.
Throughout the evening information was relayed to the command post and all leads were followed up on. Just after midnight we were met with a sigh of relief as it was announced that a suspect was in custody and will be charged with the murder of Detective Nguyen.
Detective Nguyen gave his life while serving to protect the citizens of Sacramento. He paid the ultimate price assuming the risk that comes with law enforcement to make the community a better place. We are indebted to him and his family, as citizens and law enforcement officers, we all share this loss.

"Unfortunately often times officers themselves may fail to remember that their lives are in danger every day, even under the most routine circumstatnces. Let this tradgedy not be in vain...I hope every officer will take notice from this and all similar situations that there are people out there who may wish to kill them and any night may be the night."

"Words cannot express the sadness I felt yesterday hearing the news. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. It takes an amazing group of heros that on a daily basis go out and do their "job"to make the rest of us safer aware of the risks they take.
With todays news of the arrest of the 16 year old, mixed feelings of justice and anger, of how senseless a juvenile with gang ties is who is probably now facing life in prison. Parents, wake up, get involved with your kids lifes and stay involved! My wife and I have raised two awesome kids, and continue to support and guide them. Lets intervene in one childs life who is going off course, and then two children... Peace be with all members of the Sheriffs Dept in this time."

"My deepest condolances to the family and to the world. This loss was not necessary. Officer's put their lives on the line everyday, every minute and yet are paid no respect for doing a job that takes a special person to do.
No, they are not paid millions, like we pay movie stars, ball players and many other entertainment areas. This is a sick world and something must be done to respect life and to respect our Law Enforcement Officers that protect us.
God Bless the Vu Nguyen family and the Law Enforcement Community, truly sorry for your and our great loss.
Please people think about this, next time you need help call a movie star or one of the entertainers we pay millions to, do you think they will come? Respect all life. Respect you Law Enforcement Officers."

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the department as well as friends and family at this time. I am so sorry for your loss."
