On May 8, 2008, at 3:31 a.m. Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call reporting a vehicle being burglarized by two subjects in a field which is located next to an apartment complex in the 7200 block of East Parkway. Two deputies arrived and approached a white a two-door Ford Expedition on foot. As the deputies approached the vehicle one of the suspects, who was stripping a vehicle parked in the field, ran from the scene. One of the deputies chased him on foot. The driver of the white Ford got out of the vehicle and was handcuffed by the second deputy.

As he was taking the handcuffed suspect into custody, the deputy looked up to see the Expedition, driven by an unseen third suspect, coming directly toward him. Believing his life was in imminent danger the deputy drew his service weapon and fired at the oncoming vehicle.

After being fired upon, and without seeking an alternate escape route, the vehicle drove directly toward the second deputy who was running after the first suspect. The second deputy saw the vehicle coming directly toward him and believing his life was in imminent danger drew his service weapon and fired at the vehicle to stop the threat to his life. The vehicle stopped after the second volley of shots was fired. The deputies then approached the vehicle and found a 22-year old woman who had been struck by the gunfire multiple times in the legs. The female suspect, who has a lengthy criminal record, was taken into custody and then transported to a local hospital; she is expected to survive.

During the shootings both male suspects were able to flee from the scene. The handcuffed suspect, a 23-year-old resident of Sacramento with an extensive criminal history, was recaptured a short distance away by a Sheriff’s K-9 unit. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the dog bites he sustained during his recapture. The third suspect, described as a white male adult, 5’11” tall, weighing 180 pounds, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans was able to avoid capture.

In accordance with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department’s policies and procedures, the two deputies will be placed on paid administrative leave. The first deputy is a 33-year-old seven-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Department. The second deputy is a 41-year-old twenty-year veteran. The circumstances surrounding this incident will be investigated by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Unit, and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
