October 27th, 2007 The 2007 Western States Police K9 Association K9 Trial hosted by the Elk Grove Police Department K9 association was held at Elk Grove Regional Park. 43 different K9 teams from different Northern California law enforcement agencies competed in the Trial, including five SSDK9 teams. |

Members of the SSD K9 Unit duplicated in training a real life scenario on the rooftop of the Santa Fe Market in North Highlands. In the real life scenario the K9 was harnessed and lifted on the rooftop to investigate a rooftop burglary of the Santa Fe Market. The roof was searched and the suspect was located by the K9 hiding in a large covered air vent. It's important that our dogs are comfortable being in the harness and hoisted on rooftops for situations like these. |

The Pet Owners Organization of Citrus Heights hosted a fundraising event benefitting the SSD K9 Unit. The event consisted of a 5K run and a mile run/walk. The event was a huge success and fun was had by all.

The SSD K9 Unit and Marine Enforcement Detail teamed up for a training day at Hogback Island in the delta. The Sacramento region is host to the Sacramento River, American River, and the delta. It is important that our K9 partners are confident working in and around the water and on our department boats in case we are deployed in these waterways. We have many new young dogs and they all did great. Special thanks to agitator Deputy James Hatfield for catching our dogs over and over again. |

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. National Police Week pays tribute to the courageous men and women who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This year we honor two of our own, Deputies Joeseph Kievernagel and Kevin Blount. |

June 7, 2006 - The Sacramento Sheriff's Department and the Sacramento Police Department co-sponsored the 1st annual Northern California Cops For Kids Fly-In. The Cops For Kids Fly-In is a charity toy run conducted by law enforcement air operations pilots from all over California. The air crews flew into Mather bringing with them toys collected from their respective agencies. The air operations officers along with several local officers helped deliver the toys to children being treated at the UC Davis Children's Hospital and Shriners Hospital. |

Officers who participanted in the Cops For Kids Fly-In gathered at the SSD Air Operations hangar at Mather Field Airport. Deputy Jeff Werblun thanked the participants for their involvement while everyone enjoyed a BBQ lunch. One by one the air units took off to head back home. |

The SSD K9 Detail trained at the Riverwalk Way Training Facility. Part of the training was devoted to placing the dogs in muzzles and the handlers making contact with a "suspect." When the suspect attacked, the dog was called from the car to assist and help defend its handler. |

August 29 through the 31st four members of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department Canine Detail attended the “Urban Tactical Training” course in the city of Downey, Los Angeles County, California. Officers from the Gardena Police Department hosted the course. This was an intense demanding course both for the canines as well as the handlers. There were twenty canine teams from various departments such as, Los Angeles Air Port Police, Los Angeles County Police Department, Corona Police Department, Simi Valley Police Department, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, San Leandro Police Department and the Getty Museum. The canine teams were challenged in the areas of high-risk vehicle stops, building searches and area searches. The training provided the handlers with the knowledge, comprehension, application and critical thinking to overcome these challenges. The Urban Tactical Training was developed because of a critical need to properly train Officers and Canine Handlers in mastering techniques for real life survival situations. |

The Coast Guard hosted an open house at their hanger located on the northern edge of McClellan Park, formerly McClellan Air Force Base. The open house highlighted the Coast Guard and its aircraft. Several public safety agencies were also in attendance sharing their special equipment with the public. Members of the SSD K9 Detail and their K9 partners participated in the event and made many new friends. |

The Sacramento Police and Sheriff K9 Units came together for a joint training day at the SSD Range. The goal of the training day was to get the K9's and their handlers used to working in a tear gas filled environment. The K9's and handlers conducted an actual search for a decoy in the tear gas house. The K9's are able to search and apprehend a suspect with little difficulty despite the presence of tear gas and limited visibility.

These are pictures of a K9 training day at the SSD Range. We outfitted our K9's with a rapel harness and lifted them off the ground. The purpose was to get our K9's comfortable wearing the harness and being off the ground in the event it is necessary to deploy in the field. As you can see all of the dogs had no problem. There are a few pictures of the dogs apprehending a decoy while in the harness and elevated 20 feet off the ground. |
