K9 Kaleo Retired From Service Due To Cancer
By Mark Limbird K97
I never thought I would be writing something like this so soon. After four and a half years of service with the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department K9 Kaleo has been retired. Kaleo was recently retired after a tumor was discovered on his rear foot. He was retired from service due to unforeseen medical expenses that the county could not cover.
I have had many different feelings about Kaleo being retired, but in the end it was what was best for his health. In the four years we worked together I never had any doubt that he had my back. I can think of several occasions where he definitely saved my life. He even took a shovel to the head from a suspect after locating him that could have easily been meant for an officer.
Kaleo has been my partner, friend, and family member. I will miss getting ready for work at night with him running around the house just waiting for me to open the door. Many say the bond you develop with your first dog is something special. This statement is true and I thank Kaleo for some of the best four years on the Sheriff’s Department. Kaleo had this game he used to play with officers, citizens, or any poor person he could bait in. He would bring you an item, sometimes a ball, a water bottle, leaf, or even a paper clip. He would drop it at your feet and if you didn’t notice him then he would place it in your lap. If you were foolish enough to throw it for him then he had you hooked. He would play the game as long as you would throw the item. This was one special aspect of Kaleo’s personality. He could be the lovable friendly dog just wanting to play, but when it came time to work it was all business.
Thanks to the many donations and support from everyone throughout the years SSDK9 was able to cover the cost for the surgery to remove the tumor. The prognosis I have received from the veterinarians is good, and all of his scans have come back negative for cancer anywhere in his body. Kaleo’s next step will be to undergo radiation and chemotherapy to prevent the tumor from growing back. This will occur after his foot heals from surgery. Since his surgery Kaleo has been relaxing at home. He still gets excited everyday I get ready for work and you would never know he had even had surgery. Hopefully Kaleo will be able to enjoy a nice long retired life with my family. He has become a special part of our family and was even there to greet my three children when they first came home from the hospital.
I would like to thank Kaleo for being a great partner and let him know that my new four legged partner will have some big shoes to fill. SSDK9 will be holding a 5K/10K race fundraiser in August in hopes to raise money to cover the costly expense for radiation treatment and chemotherapy. We look forward to seeing everyone there and look back to the website for updates about the run.

"Went through cancer with my dog Rocky (he has a mass cell tumor) and had it removed and then radiated and he is now happy and healthy. I found that Northern CA Vet. Specialists were the best! You guys might want to consider getting k9 insurance (They do cover injury illness that's not job related) and the cancer would have been covered up to 20k. I learned the hard way the first time but now all my malinois have insurance. Hope all goes well!"

"Dear Mark and Kaleo, I have been retired from the Sac Sheriff's Dept. for 5 yrs now, but always check the website as I miss everybody, and was so very sad to see the news about Kaleo. I remember before i left to move to klamath you were gonna try to bring Kaleo by for me to meet, but there was not enough time. I now wish that could have happened. I plan on a trip back to calif this summer, and if possible would like to know about the fundraiser, and maybe i can do my part and help out. Im so very sorry for you and Kaleo both, and just want to say-enjoy him everyday, and Im happy you got to work together for atleast 4 yrs now. patti williams"

"Hey Mark,
I just read about Kaleo. I know it was very hard to write. It brought both tears of sadness and tears of joy..... the sadness of course because Kaleo will not be able to work with you anymore and joy because you will still have what I hope will be many more years together. I'm not sure if you remember me because it was years ago that we met. I was driving a tow truck graveyard and you were standing by in a mobile home park off Gerber Road waiting for me to hook a recovered carjacked vehicle. You took the time to explain the K9 Unit to me and let me love on Kaleo. It was because of this contact that I became a K9 officer myself. I think only a K9 Officer would understand the bond that one feels with their partner/friend. I wish you two the best that the future can offer and would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time that night to change my life. You and Kaleo are an asset to your team and I will never forget!"

"Mark, Kind of strange how things work isn't it. He saves your life and now you get to save his. I loved pampering my old guy and so will you. He did his job and the two of you were a great and respected team. The wife and I will see you at the run. In our thoughts bud!"

"So sorry to hear about Kaleo. There is a group in Elk Grove that is working on raising money for research to stamp out k-9 cancer. They may have some additonal resources that may be helpful. Wishing you all the best Junette"
