K96 Deputy Kyle Hoertsch - K9 Rocky
Hello my name is Kyle and this is my partner Rocky. Rocky is a German Shepherd imported from the Czech Republic. Rocky was born in October of 2004. Even though Rocky’s career has just started I have been with the Sheriff’s Department for 10 years.
I went to the sheriff’s academy with Todd Henry (K95) and we both were sworn in to full time duty on the same day. Since I was sworn in 10 minutes before him I will always have senority on him even if its 10 minutes it still counts. My first assignment was for corrections and then patrol for about a year and a half.
Fortunately I was chosen to be a member of the Departments Parole Impact Team (PIT) which lasted for two years. During that time frame the PIT team was responsible for over 1500 arrests many of them parole violators. Due to a high percentage of our arrestees fleeing on contact K9 was always welcomed and requested to assist. Throughout that two year period I had an opportunity to work with every member of the K9 unit.
While on the PIT Team I was selected to a Narcotics Detective position with one of our contract cities, Elk Grove Police Department. As a detective I was assigned to the EGPD Street Crimes Unit (SCU). Within the first few months it was apparent that the team needed the assistance of a Narcotics Detector Dog (NDD). In October of 2004 I was fortunate enough to be assigned a NDD who I named “Radar.”
Radar was a female yellow Labrador who was a very loyal partner. During our time together she was responsible for seizing over 22 pounds of narcotics, over $70,000.00 in illicit monies and numerous persons placed in custody with weapon confiscated. While I chose to stay with the Sheriff’s Department Radar was owned by the City of Elk Grove and had to stay.
I realized very quickly that while the narcotics detective position was fun I had a real passion for the dog work. You have an awesome tool at your disposal who will mold your reputation for you. On top of doing the hard work the dog never will bring up a bad conversation or pick a terrible place to eat.
So Radar went back and Rocky arrived from Indiana. I went from a very omega type of dog (Radar) to a very young hard head alpha male (Rocky). Rocky has been running me around ever since.
I get the question if I am going to promote every time the sergeants examine comes out. I can tell you that if I continue to be blessed with dogs like Rocky and Radar and great partners I will ride this job out till my body cant handle it anymore.
