My name is Deputy Anthony Jenkins. I have been a Deputy Sheriff for the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department since May of 1994. Within that time, my job assignments have included work at the county main jail and street patrol. I joined the Sheriff’s Canine Detail in November of 2001. I love my current job assignment and there is no other position I would rather work in the department. In addition to working on the Canine Detail, I am a part-time instructor for arrest control, handcuffing, use of baton, defensive tactics, and simunition. I am also the first and only African-American canine handler in the 150 year history of the Sheriff’s Department.

Since joining the Canine Detail I have worked with four canine partners. The first two canine partners were retired due to their age. My third canine partner was Ado. Ado was a German shepherd from Holland. Ado and I trained together and in November of 2005 we were certified as a canine team. Ado and I worked very well together. Unfortunately, on January 18, 2009 Ado was killed by a passing motorist while chasing after a carjacking suspect.

On January 22, 2009, I received my current canine partner Eko (pronounced echo). Eko is a German shepherd from Holland. He was born on August 23, 2007. Eko has great drive, a dedication to please, and is very friendly. Eko and I went through extensive training and were certified in late May of 2009. Eko is certified in locating wanted subjects, missing persons, handler protection, and searching for evidence. After being certified as a canine team we were back on the streets and working to protect citizens and finding and catching the "bad guys." Eko has an outstanding nose for sniffing out criminals who try to avoid capture and think they are above the law.

One of the things Eko and I do in our spare time is competing in the Western State Police Canine Association Canine Trials. The canine trials have four phases of competition: search, obedience, agility, and handler protection. During 2010 we competed in five out of ten of the canine trials that were held. Each canine trial had approximately 30 different canine teams competing. Eko has placed 1st in search and agility a few times, including a 1st place award for search where he located the hiding person in 14 seconds. At the end of the 2010 competitions Eko and I placed 5th overall for the year.

In Eko's spare time he likes to spend time with the family chasing his favorite toy around the yard, going for walks, being pampered with baths, and getting scratched behind his ears.
